Maggie bought this fine boxed wine, which she hardly enjoyed. I, on the other hand, thought for wine in a box that it was pretty drinkable.
I don't know how seriously I should take this wine, but it was about $18 for 3 liters, which it says is about the equivalent of four bottles of wine. I would say that's a pretty good deal. Not to mention the box is recyclable.
The vintage was 2009, which is remarkable. Don't ask me why. There do seem to be, what come off as, some higher quality boxed wines these days. At least better than the Franzia I drank at times in college because it was sad, funny and cheap.
This is far from the best Cabernet I've had, but honestly, it's probably not the worst. The color isn't all that impressive. It's rather clear on the edges and not so dark all the way through, but it does have a brick red tint that at least gives something appealing to the appearance of wine.
The aroma is not so impressive, hints of lighter fruits rather than the rich dark fruit aroma I prefer, maybe some jam and a little bit of pepper. The taste combined with the mouthfeel make up for that a little bit, as it is not very acidic, very smooth and a little dry. I would probably give this wine a C overall.
This is definitely a value buy at roughly $4.50 a bottle, as the wine is not impressive, but I think if you're just looking for something to relax with after work, or dinner that this could fit the bill.
As a warning, I think that after releasing it from the spout, you should probably let it air out a bit, as it can almost have a carbonated feel when drinking it immediately after pouring a glass. This could be a unique circumstance and may require further evaluation.
